How to avoid the discomfort of Hemorrhoids.
by David Skul

Symptomatic hemorrhoids result from inflammation of the mucosa and interstitial tissue surrounding the normal veins of the anorectum. These veins provide the normal pathway for return of blood from the anus and rectum back through the circulation of the heart. The veins in the rectum drain into the portal circulation and to the liver prior to returning to the heart, while the veins of the anus drain directly into the central circulation.

There are a lot of people who suffer from hemorrhoids regularly and occasionally. Most cases occur without specific cause. They occur with greater risk in the group of people who have jobs that requires them to sit for a long period of time such as office workers and drivers. People who are prone to constipation, are those who frequently eat spicy food and people who simply do not drink enough fluid may suffer from constipation and hemorrhoid symptoms. Diet is another major factor; those people who eat foods that are low in fiber are prone to is constipation, and hemorrhoid symptoms. Most of the women develop hemorrhoids during pregnancy period. This has to do with the large gravid uterus pressing on pelvic veins and altering the circulation in those veins. Pregnancy also induces a state in which there is a great circulating blood volume and general engorgement of blood vessels.

Pain, bleeding and feeling a lump in or around the anus are the common symptoms of hemorrhoids. The pain may be unbearable after defacation and bleeding is usually only a few drops seen in the toilet bowl or on toilet paper. This may be caused by tearing an inflamed vein during defacation. It may become very painful because of the constant irritation from clothing, sitting or constant bowel movement. The worst pain and inflammation is most often caused with extensive thrombosis within the hemorrhoidal veins.

The treatment depends on the severity and nature of the hemorrhoids. Patients who has constant bleeding should undergo proctosigmoisdocsopy to rule out the presence of a tumor. People over 50 year of age may require a full colonoscopy test.

Those patients who has thrombosed hemorrhoids will require an incision and drainage of thrombosed hemorrhoid. It is a minor procedure with local anesthesia and provides immediate relief of the exquisite pain caused by the thrombosed hemorrhoid. Additional treatment may subsequently be warranted for removal of the hemorrhoid. While patients with extensive hemorrhoids or with hemorrhoids in association with a fistula or fissure may need a surgery.

Surgical hemorrhoidectomy involves removal of the hemorrhoidal tissue under general anesthesia. The tissue is removed using cautery or laser and the resulting defect is repaired with sutures.

All people with symptoms of hemorrhoids should start on a habit to take stool softeners and warm soaks. For relief, Metamucil and mineral oil are used for medication to normalize the gastrointestinal tract.
